Want to learn about this powerful music tracker? You've come to the right place for tutorials about the features and workflow of Renoise, as well as inspirational community videos.
Keyzones
It’s possible to create complex instruments and music without ever touching the Keyzones section of the Sampler. However, if you want to control how different samples are played across a range of notes and velocities then that instrument will need to make use of Keyzones.

Sampler: Note-Off Layer
Переглядів 1,7 тис.5 місяців тому
Triggering samples in the Note-Off layer has some restrictions that you need to deal with, and getting the most out of it requires creatively incorporating some more advanced features. So in this video we’ll work through a few examples to hopefully inspire you to create your own techniques. 0:00 - Intro 1:10 - Setup 2:07 - Restrictions 4:23 - Examples
Sample One Shot
Переглядів 1,5 тис.6 місяців тому
Being able to play certain sounds as a ‘One Shot’ is an old solution to an old problem: sometimes samples, usually drums, need to ignore Note-Off events and simply play through the entire waveform. While having such an option is useful when playing or recording live using the computer keyboard, it is crucial for hardware controllers that are designed only to be struck briefly. 0:00 - Intro 0:58...
Reverberation - Reverb, mpReverb & Convolver
Переглядів 1,1 тис.7 місяців тому
Reverberation is when a sound wave is reflected off of various surfaces, extending its length and gaining a particular character from the acoustic environment. Reverb effects simulate this natural process, and you’ll find three such devices in Renoise & Redux. 0:00 - Intro 0:56 - Reverb 3:38 - mpReverb 5:18 - Convolver 10:00 - Group Tracks 10:54 - Meta Control 11:42 - Instrument FX Chains 14:07...
Mastering Devices - Bus Compressor, Exciter & Maximizer
Переглядів 1,6 тис.10 місяців тому
When creating music in Renoise, all of the separate instruments and tracks come together in one place: the Master track. Renoise has three devices designed for the precise shaping of the final audio. 0:00 - Intro 0:54 - Bus Compressor 2:45 - Exciter 4:36 - Maximizer
Shape Devices - Distortion, LofiMat & Cabinet Simulator
Переглядів 1,7 тис.Рік тому
As the name suggests, these effects modify the shape of the waveform passing through them. The Distortion & Cabinet Simulator devices focus on making changes to the signal vertically, while the LofiMat applies restrictions to both the vertical and horizontal planes. All three feature separate Dry & Wet Mix sliders for complete control over the volume of the original and altered audio. 0:00 - In...
Analog & Digital Filters
Переглядів 1,9 тис.Рік тому
Audio filters manipulate the frequency spectrum, sometimes for functional, mixing purposes and sometimes for purely artistic reasons. We’ve previously looked at the EQ devices which tend to use filtering for the former, and the Comb Filter which concentrates on the latter. Now let’s take a look at the Analog and Digital Filters, which can do a bit of both. Native DSP Context Menu tool: www.reno...
Quantization
Переглядів 1,9 тис.Рік тому
Quantization shifts the placement of notes so that they snap to a certain timing. Renoise & Redux have a few methods of doing this for existing notes or while recording new notes. There’s also an additional feature you can use when recording new samples. 0:00 - Intro 0:29 - Pattern Editor 2:23 - Instrument Editor 4:29 - Recording New Samples
Scale & Key
Переглядів 3,4 тис.Рік тому
Just like the oldest tracker programs, Renoise & Redux still use the traditional 12-note western scale used for acoustic instruments. As you’d expect though, there are options to control how this works. 0:00 - Intro 0:36 - Scale & Key Options 4:10 - Changing Scale & Key 5:35 - Breaking The Scale
Compression
Переглядів 2,1 тис.Рік тому
The results of compression are not as musically obvious as other effects like reverb & distortion, which can lead to some incorrect assumptions about the use and misuse of compressors. So let's take a look at how this works in Renoise & Redux. Predictably Random
Переглядів 3,9 тис.Рік тому
There are lots of ways of introducing randomness across the various features of Renoise and Redux. But what if you generated changes at random initially and you like what you heard, so you want those changes to be the same each time the song is played? 0:00 - Intro 0:26 - Manual Methods 1:27 - Humanize vs Randomize 2:11 - Automatic Methods 5:46 - Sampler Keyzones
Automation Within An Instrument
Переглядів 3 тис.Рік тому
Track effects are automated with effect commands & graphical automation. Those methods can also automate effects within an instrument using macros. Those automations must be manually created across the entire song, but there is another technique that works automatically. 0:00 - Intro 0:38 - Key/Velocity Tracker & Phrases 2:49 - Expanding The Basic Technique
Key Tracker & Velocity Tracker
Переглядів 2 тис.2 роки тому
As their names suggest, the Key and Velocity Trackers accept as inputs: key (or 'note') values, and velocity (or 'volume') values. The devices then process this input through various options to create an output, which is used to control a Destination parameter. 0:00 - Intro 0:42 - Shared Parameters 2:21 - Input Range 4:32 - Triggering An Input 6:37 - Multiple Simultaneous Values 7:49 - Modulati...
Global Groove & Phrase Shuffle
Переглядів 3,2 тис.2 роки тому
While the delay column can be used to manually create swinging rhythms for individual notes, there are two other automatic methods available in the form of Global Groove and Phrase Shuffle. 0:00 - Intro 0:21 - Global Groove 4:07 - Phrase Shuffle
Gainer & Stereo Expander
Переглядів 1,3 тис.2 роки тому
The Gainer & Stereo Expander effects make the Panning, Volume and Width parameters from the Pre-Mixer available within these devices, with a few useful expansions. This means that these fundamental aspects of an audio signal can be controlled from anywhere within an effect chain. 0:00 - Intro 0:31 - Gainer 2:15 - Stereo Expander 6:01 - A Link In The Chain

Mapping Devices - Hydra, Meta Mixer & Formula
The music industry is a playground for signal processing, it's amazing.
I don't understand the random behavior with overlapping keyzones-- How is a round-robin sequence random? In practice it does appear to be random, but in that case I don't know what round-robin means here, isn't that the same as cycle? I vaguely remember in Csound that all the psuedorandom generators used a definable seed and LFOs started their phases from zero or a specified point, so even with tons of randomness in the patch it would be repeatable. With renoise I use LFOs on everything and each render is subtly different. Sometimes it's a matter of just running it over and over until I get one I like. But I wish you could just define the seeds and phases so once you have something you like it will always render that way.
thanks a lot
how do we play pitch with a sample chain sliced to a grid of x64 samples ??
I LOVE Renoise. There, I said it. Thanks for the continuing uploads.
Could anyone give link to the music in the background at the Maximiser part? I would love to listen to it.
It's 'Tension', one of the demo songs that come included with Renoise.
love this feature
At a glance, this program looked hard to grasp. The tutorials are what sold me on it, and I'm steadily getting more and more familiar, while cranking out... questionable, but promising, practice pieces! Whole lot of potential in there, too... if you can absorb enough information to use all the features, granted. The tutorials really do help, though.
Is it possible to have a threshhold on eq knobs so that when a certain frequency band's volume exceeds its threshhold, the eq starts adjusting that frequency band down based on how much the threshhold was exceeded?
You can set this up yourself with Multband Send and your choice of how to reduce the volume.
Loving it!!
never used any of this, nice!
*can you export the edited samples to .wav or .sfz or .sf2?*
Samples are always .wav files when saving via the Disk Browser. Exporting mulitiple samples as .sfz can be done via the Preset menu in the Keyzones section: tutorials.renoise.com/wiki/Libraries
Insane software. I get it, though it's for everyone, insane for breaks.
Is there a reason why you set the bus after exciter, I do that the other way around ..
Do you have a timestamp of where you see this?
@@renoise I think it was somewhere in the beginning, but just quick like an overview. I was just wondering if it was on purpose and you had som idea, I mean to compress the exciter sound would do it for some but I like the other way around. Just a matter of taste. Love the program!
Super underrated. A DnB must
1:14 why is it so funny
i am trying to create a sine lfo (or any waveform lfo that i have in my library) to trigger one of the effects start/stop on a tape stop effect plugin that i have pulled up in Renoise - is this possible? i am coming over from using logic but want to learn as much as i can about the wonders of the Renoise DAW i know have 🙏
Yes it is. Just load up the plugin, then put an lfo on the same track and assign it to that effect, and the desired parameter.
Always love watching Renoise videos!
I love u renoise team ❤️
Quick comment would be: Oh, I never thought of a use like that. I like it. Slightly longer comment would be: I purchased Renoise somewhat around the beginning of the year, and have only really had time to get a feel for it and dabble. I am done with work in two days until the new year, if I stay on point, and my whole focus is on diving into making tunes like I once used to (OctaMED/Open MPT), but with the capabilities of Renoise. To drop this short video seems like a good omen. I'm not superstitious, but I feel a genuine bubbling going on, like the starts are aligning one time! 🤩
nice one thanks
What the hell is this monstrosity ?!!!
mpReverb my beloved
Very informative and useful breakdown. I've had a habit of just tinkering and finding the X that I was looking for in many software programs throughout the years... going back to OctaMED on my late but trusty Amiga, but also with painting programs etc... I have found that approach has given me many moments where I have used a "tool" in a creative way that I never would have stumbled upon, but at the same I have come to understand that actually reading the manual a good thing too. I think a little of both worlds feels the right thing for me. My stubbornness is softening, and I'm genuinely getting insight about various basic principles that I have just applied for years, but I see beautiful little tweaks here and there. Also, Raspberry Pi was mentioned. A Pi and Renoise setup is possibly my favorite new thing to think about and feel all warm and fuzzy inside. 😍
Im shit a math's so numbers are not my strong point but I may take the plunge and devote time into this as I can see the potential and judging by other's who use it well it is highly capable indeed.
nice
Take my money
I'm a big fan of Tracker workflows and Renoise in particular, but sidechaining is probably the most flawed when compared to other DAWs like Bitwig, Cubase, Ableton etc... Even 3rd party sidechain plugins having to be routed in this manner seems a bit step heavy... or maybe I am just used to the one click options... I see why all the extra routing can also be beneficial but maybe just my workflow is too consumed by traditional DAW sidechaining...
is there any way to insert chops while the sample plays,so you can use the slicer in an mpc style way? really love renoise,it's just that it's gotten pretty repetitive having to put in every slice by hand, when my devices like the sp404mk2 let me put a chop while it plays, which i love.
So if you didnt "reset" the change from the previous pattern, all the following patterns will keep the change? I have a problem with the Sylenth1 "portamento". I only need it for ONE pattern but after I make an automation it affect all the patterns even it there's not aumation in those. How does it actually work?
Changes made through automation stay in place for the rest of the song.
I can't get my sample to run as far as the release section, when retriggering and using the modulation as you are doing from about 2:00 on... Do you have any ideas why? Thank you
I added a note off command and that's let the sample go to that release stage, not quite the same as what's happening on your screen but it's close
It also only works if I have loop on with that exit loop on note off button on
You probably set the NNA to 'Cut'.
It still didn't really show me "do this...now do this..." I really appreciate these tutorials but they seem a little vague.
Love watching new Renoise videos!!
Sexy Renoise Man voice is back with another banger. 😂 But joking aside, I struggle with controlling the sound on a overall level, when I wish to have all tracks (so far just three in a EP context) marry themselves together as a cohesive whole. This is very helpful. ❤ Edit: 5:40 Gaahh... anyone name that oldschool Rave cover playing? I'm so embarrassed for asking, becouse of how much of a classic that is. I need to find it in my collection. I know I have it on vinyl, but where to start! 🥵 Double Edit: It came to me.... LFO!!!! 🥶
Glad you figured it out. The song name is shown in the top-left of the Renoise window when not in full-screen.
Thanks for explaining the Maximizer as a hard limiter.
The Exciter device is so good I use it all the time!
babe wake up, new renoise upload
Cool!
Excellent description of compression. Thanks Renoise!
Thanks for great tutorial ... is there any way to macro vst plugins?
Not using Macros, but the Instrument Automation device performs a similar function for Plugins: tutorials.renoise.com/wiki/Meta_Devices
Where can I get the groove calculator tool?
1. So Unobass-2.xrni seems to be gone, but I'm spotting Unobass.xrni in the Instr./Bass/ folder 2. For the Filter, the "Digital Filter" seems to be closest.
Been using renoise for almost 20 years, love it. Still difficult at times. It's very extensive and goes very deep.
Good stuff, was already enjoying the fold effect.
Why does phrase & redux use shuffle only & renoise uses the 4 sliders system? I love renoises groove method & was disappointed to load up redux into different daw only to notice the groove sliders were missing.
This software ASS!!!1!!11
Video are not very clear.
Could you do a video on the Lo-Fi effect? I've had so much fun playing around with it but I don't really understand what I'm doing
The LofiMat was covered in the most recent video: ua-cam.com/video/AxA8DnIci6g/v-deo.html
@@renoise nice, thank you
Dankeschön! I have worked with Fasttracker, Impulse Tracker and Jeskola Buzz (which was the coolest thing I have ever worked with in the end of the 90s) And Renoise is the best for an old Tracker Guy like me. Tracks, Patterns and even VST support and a lot of new features. This is a dream come true!
Nice filters, thanx for showing!
